Palaeography

Letters of the archaic alphabet of Thera: Alpha: left stroke divergent, diagonal crossbar. Ny: second and third bar shorter

third bar divergent. Omicron: smaller than the the other letters. San: used for the sibilant sound

Commentary

The name Νάνος is attested in another case in Thera, the funerary inscription Suppl. 1609. However, it should be noted that Sigalas and Matthaiou (Horos 2000-2003, 14-16, pp. 266 ff.) re-examined this last inscription autoptically, determining that it actually yields only one name, Νιϙοκαρτίδας. Νάνος is not otherwise attested in Greece; however, in Sparta, the form Νάνιος is documented relatively later (2nd century CE).
